Our SP10 Hostess has asked us to answer the following questions...
1) How old were you when you learned how to knit?
2) Who taught you?
I think I must have been about 6 when I first learned to knit, I was in the Brownies and we used to knit squares for blankets for Oxfam. I never did any casting on or casting off, mum would have been there to do that bit, I don't even think I learnt to purl at that time, just good old garter stitch squares. A combination of Brown Owl and mum would have taught me.
I don't think I did much knitting then apart from the requisite squares, until I was 12, and the knitting fashion at the time was to knit with one large needle and one small needle to give a lacy effect, I fell in love with a jumper pattern and asked for the yarn which was a fuzzy emerald green and black mix for my birthday. I don't recall how much of it I actually did by myself or how much mum had to help with it.

Oh you knitted in the Brownies - lucky you - (I really did not like Brownies at all... ) - I remember the first thing I knitted was a scarf for a toy and someone else cast on and off - and despite the fact the scarf was meant to be straight it had a strange in and out growth as it lengthened - oh and it was in dark red... wow trawl the brain's memories... and I was taught by my primary school teacher, Miss Uzzel!
Sounds like you got interested in real knitting pretty early.
I never made the Brownies , didn't like the uniform LOL
I too knitted a scarf the first time and mine was wider at some points than other also. I was about 6yrs old but I have to say I much rathered fabric and embroidery then and had one of those dinky kids sewing machines and made clothes for my doll. I still possess one of my bits of primary schol embroidery , a felted needle holder .
I love that you were a Brownie. I'm a Tawny Owl, and thankfully, have never taught my girls to knit. My patience stops at 19 year old drunken boys!
Heh, I was a Brownie...so very long ago it makes me dizzy. I do remember making the little pegged thingies to make i-cord.
Brownies...wow! Thanks for playing.
I never made it as a Brownie either, I refused to wear the uniform! I'm loving this question Bobbi asked us, it is really great to hear how we became knitters.
Loving your new yarn, Whirlpool is a very apt name.
